Breeders of the Zwergspitz dog breed named their breed “Pomeranian” after the Pomerania area in north-east Germany and in north-west Poland. Many royals owned the breed during the 18th century, making it popular. Pomeranians are compact and sturdy dogs, with a thick layered coat and a high, flat, plumed tail. In United States, this breed was originally known as the Pinscher Toy until 1972, when it was officially renamed Miniature Pinscher. It has a short, smooth coat without an undercoat.
